oldcatlady -- just perfect!
way to go, lynnie, you can do it! But I'll miss your lobsters!
Still raining, i cancelled my class, not driving in this rain. Sigh. Maybe I'll learn how to use this next week.

2 1/2 is about the only size I did not have, but I wanted to try this.....went to joanns because I am at my Daughters and it was way closer than quilt shops....did not have any coupons but it was under $5 so I just splurged and when at the register the lady said $2.50 and winked at me and said she had one more guest coupon for half price entire order. This never happens when you are buying 10 or 20 items...Lol....fun day, and I like this new way....worked really well. As always ....when working with a sharp tool, stay alert and take a break if you feel tired or attention drifts.

I got mine for $3.25 with tax. Wanted to try a new method on this and will continue to do so.
I'm doing this mystery to break out of the "norm" and to try new things. I have to make my
flying geese now. I'm dreading it, but will go back and follow Judy's instructions and do it. I'll
let you know how it turns out.
On another note, cat owners...when i take out the rotary cutter, Zoey does all she can to stop me from using the cutter. She'll go as far as to slap me or bite my hand. Anyone else have this problem??? It's like she's saying "You know you're a klutz, and so do I so don't do it". Just wondering????

I have committed myself to trying new techniques--I want to learn! I must admit, however, that this way of making HSTs is one I don't prefer--the cutting was awkward for me, and I was afraid I would cut myself. Since I'm accurate with the old way, I'll stick with that. On the other hand, I've always been afraid of flying geese, and they worked like a charm! Two lessons learned and one remembered--use pins; don't just try to match things on the fly. All in all, a very successful day! Thanks, Judy.

I decided to go with the 4 at a time flying geese. The method I use is crazy accurate and I hardly have to trim. It's the second method in this tute: http://www.connectingthreads.com/tut...hods__D15.html
For the 4-1/2" size we are using, cut the large square at 5-1/4" and the small squares at 2-7/8".

BelfrayBat, I just add three inches to what I want the finished half square triangle to be on the sewing all around. When I cut into fourths, I have very little to need to square off.

Here's my star and the re-worked HSTs. I decided to switch C & D as I wanted more of the brightly patterned fabric in the quilt. Now I'm thinking of switching out fabric E as the original seems too busy now. What do you'all think -- the pink E on the left or right? I do know I'm going to love this quilt. I might have to keep it!

I tried 5" as I had a few left over from step 2, but I had to do too much trimming. 4-1/4" seemed just right.
