Amish country in Ohio is a must see. It's in Holmes county and the general vicinity. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland....another must see. But take your wallet to that one.....pricey in my opinion.

The trip up Gulley Mt. in WV is georgous. Hawks nest is near the top and there is a lovers leap with a beautiful view of the gulley river valley. Also in that area of the state Near Summersville is the suspension bridge that is used to bungie jump off of one day each year. It was once in a TV commercial where they suspended a real Pick-up truck off of.

A trip so wonderful needs tripple A to give you maps and see the sites. Get a garmin to help you out. Be safe and have fun on your trip.

in Virginia:Albermarle County: Monticello,Thomas Jefferson'home, nearby his place is Ashlawn-Highland,I think that is Pres.Adams home, on the way to both places is "Michie Tavern",supposedly Adams and Jefferson often stopped in to eat there, and they have a eating area in there, where hostesses, waiters, waitresses are dressed in Colonial attire, and a gift shop too I believe. THere is also an Old Grist Mill that still is running, and a gift shop there too.
In Orange County,Rte 15 off of Rte 29 North: there is Montpelier, James & Dolly Madison's home.
For QUILT shops in Charlottesville, we have only 2 major contenders,Joann's and "Cottonwood" which are off of rte 29(Both shops)
And in Madison County, off of rte 29 North, is a little out of the way shop "That Little Quilt Shop"..it is housed in a former Methodist Church..has awesome fabrics, patterns, etc, everything you can think of! Prices there range $8-9.00 ,it's better quality ..the same for Cottonwood..
Richmond,VA area, not sure of what historical or sites there are,but for quilt shops they have Joann's, Hancock's not sure if there are more,I've not been to them.
In Williamsburg: there is Colonial Wmsbg..lots of walking and or hop on and off a shuttle bus, lots of shops, store owners dress in Colonial attire too. There are animals there too in certain areas. There is also nearby Jamestown (Settlement?)
For scenic vistas along the way you have Shenandoah Nat'Park, Blue Ridge Parkway. Most everywhere you go is surrounded by beautiful mts.
THen to the East of us, you have Virginia Beach area where you get the ocean.
One of the nurses just left our hospital and drove up the East coast, and over from Maine to San Diego,CA. in between she stopped at several places, posting photos on FaceBook. There was an area in Utah that no one from there has mentioned, that she went in ..I will look that up and send info. and get back with you.
Cindy
PS Are you on Facebook? If this photo comes through,it is Mt.Katadhin in Northern Maine..

In West Virginia, you have "The Chimney's" I think, don't quote me, but it's part of a nat'l park.
Be careful of the hairpin turns there..
There is also "Tamarac", I think that is in Beckly,W.VA,it is a big place that has lots of different crafts, from glass blowing, quilts, knitted, crocheted items..You name it they got it! There is also a eat in Restraunt there too.
Now if you ever go into Portland, Maine..I could give you lists of stuff there,as that is where I am originally from!

illionois, indiana, ohio ? Hubby and I are planning this trip to leave the end of march and going throgh the month of april. After 34 years of marriage and 2 other failed trips we are GOING!! So if there is some where
or some thing that you think would be a must see let us know. Thanks
I would see the "Cadillac Ranch" near Amarillo, Tx (I believe its on I-40). Skip Palo Duro Canyon if you plan on seeing the Grand Canyon in Arizona (which is a must see).
Santa Fe, New Mexico and surrounding areas (Chimayo). Eat at the restaurant on the square (old town) in Albuquerque that has a tree growin in it.
Grand Canyon in Arizona - has to be seen to be believed.
Hoover Dam on the Arizona, Nevada border and of course,
Las Vegas - check out all the free displays and shows. Eat a shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino (downtown on Fremont Street and watch the Fremont Light Show)
In Utah drive I-70 (very scenic) drop down a bit to Arches National Monument (make sure you have lots of gas in the vehicle cause the climb up to the park will eat it up)
Colorado - Estes Park, the USAF academy in Colorado Springs.
Kansas - the Flint Hills (I believe thats what they are called) and around KC go to the Hallmark place and watch cards being made.
Arkansas - Hot Springs and maybe pan for diamonds at the diamond mine
Missouri - Branson and area around Lake of the Ozarks. St Louis and the amazing Arch, St Louis Cathedral and the area around the University.
Illinois - tons of stuff around Chicago area, the Natural History Museum to see Sue (a huge T-Rex), the Science and Industry Museum (the Shedd Aquarium was okay but there are lots better in other places and same with Adler Planetarium)
and if you PM specific places you want to stop I will tell you if I've been there and what I saw thats worthwhile.
Be prepared for long drives in the west with not much inbetween and always, always carry water in the car.

OHIO---

Don't know your exact route so...

Holmes County is the Amish Country here..cheese shops, quilt shops (Miller's in Charm), Lehman's Hardware in Kidron (Hubby will love it). Just the countryside is beautiful to see while driving. If you need a place to stay..Berlin Village in Berlin (they have a website, but you must reserve on the phone)..REALLY clean, comfy, and very very reasonably priced.

Columbus has all the urban stuff. You might be able to catch a baseball game at Huntington Park or sample a few beers in the Brewery District. Have dinner at Schmidts in German Village. Our Zoo is fantastic!

The Air Force Museum in Dayton is amazing. Cincinnati has the Freedom Museum, Reds Baseball, andmany sights along the Ohio River and riverboat rides, dinners, etc.

I envy you!!! Have a great time!! :P :P
