It was sort of interesting to see how people travel - some people manage with a small suitcase - some brought three or four largish suitcases - and they weren't even doing anything special at the event.

Also, sharing a bathroom and a vanity with three other people - that was also sort or interesting/entertaining/aggravating - depending on my mood and how long they were taking - and how urgently I needed to use the bathroom.

It does work better when the toilet/shower/tub is separated from the vanity/sink/mirror.
For me, I would just say that I have some severe sleep issues and really do better in a single room. I did the 4 to a room thing a couple times when I was active with the local DAR chapter and went to state conference. The bathroom part was worst. The closet space problem almost as bad. I got almost no sleep for 3 days and finally gave up on it. I don't know what others thought of me having my own room but at least I got some sleep.

I say : Nothing against everyone but I prefer my own room.

Some will put up with inconvenience because they are cheap not because they have to. They don't mind asking everyone to be cheap with them so I don't mind replying no.

I like my privacy at the end of a busy day filled with socializing, but I could probably do the shared room thing for a week and really enjoy getting to know other quilters. However, I have RA and roll back and forth finding a comfortable position All. Night. Long. It would undoubtedly bother my roomies, so I would opt for my own room, too.

My DH is a saint. He is just the right size and shape to support my shoulder position when we spoon.......if I fall deeply asleep for very long his whole one side will be numb from holding still! I have offered to set him up in an adjoining room and he won't hear of it. He woo'ed me with pots of hot, strong coffee and brings me a cup every morning. I'd keep him for that alone!

Before I got a sleep study and received my CPAP machine, I was a big snorer.

At one retreat, I roomed with a lady who always wore her silver hair up in a bun. In the middle of the night, when I was snoring, she punched me on the shoulder. I must have been in a very deep sleep, because when I awoke, all I saw was this lady in white with all this white hair flowing all around her. It scared the bajeebers out of me and I screamed so loud that other quilters came out of their room to see who was getting murdered. I thought I was in a horror movie, it was a good thing that she didn't have a pair of scissors in her hand. I probably would have had a heart attack.

It is funny to think of now, but then it was really embarrassing to me. I now go to retreats where I can afford a private room. Even though I don't snore now, it does feel good to be able to be with lots of people and then have a quiet place to be by myself.

One more thing, if you do happen to room with a snorer, I found that if you can stand to wear earbuds at night, I will put a CD in my portable CD player (or use an MP3 player) with nature sounds. I like to listen to the ocean, wind and rain, or thunder storms while I sleep. They not only put me to sleep, but the sounds drown out all other sounds like snoring or people talking in their sleep or other people talking next door.

I was at a gathering of high school friends recently. We met at one of the friends houses so there was no choice of having a separate room. One of my friends also has a C-Pap. I too like a separate room especially when I don’t know the other person very well. I always worry about the other person “having to listen” to the machine all night. With my friend on her C-Pap neither of us was bothered by the other.

I don't go to retreats because there is too much togetherness for me. I need time away to regroup, plus I have irritable bowel problems and don't sleep well when I travel. Several of my friends are planning a quilting day camp for us. Together during the day then home to our own bed in the evening. That seems like a good solution to me.

I also prefer a room to myself for various reasons. One is snoring...yes me!! Another is that I like to fall asleep sometimes watching TV or reading a book and I want all the hot water to myself for a long shower.

Not to. My DH snores and he says I snore, but only his snoring bothers me. Like you, I would get a room for myself just to spare others.

No problem for me I don't go on retreats. Love being at home, I never sleep good away from home.
