I save pretty small strips.. 4" or so. I piece them together for little projects like placemats and coasters. Last week I threw out a bunch of 2&3 inch strips I had cut from my latest queen sized quilt before binding... Then while away for a weekend with a friend, she bought a pattern for a purse/bag which uses jelly roll strips and narrow batting strips. I came home and retrieved the scraps of batting from my sewing room waste basket. Guess I'll be making a purse with some of them.

I use them for Swiffer too. But even smaller pieces are used to 'dust' the sewing room. It grabs threads from all surfaces, even the machine, and then just toss it. Pin a small piece to your shirt and instead of aiming for the wastebasket with those cut thread ends, just slap them onto the pinned batting and they'll stay there till you remove it. Of course you get funny looks when you go out shopping or to lunch and still have that thready thing hanging from your chest. Quilters will know what it is!

Placemat size for a long time, then I read a quilt as you go method and now I save 8 1/2 x 8 1/2. What I definitely toss are the long strips cut away from a quilt once it is quilted. I don't sew any together to form larger quilt batting.

I save any scraps of batting that might make something nice, from potholders to table runners. I sew some of the pieces together to make more larger batts for quilts, but I don't throw very much away. I quilt by the frugal method as my quilt allowance isn't very large. I buy maybe $50.-$100.00 a month on my quilting. I have an extensive stash thanks to many friends who have contributed, but every saving helps, so I save 4" strips to larger pieces of batting all the time.

batting scraps
We hear a lot on here about saving scraps to make pet beds, so why are we throwing away the batting. It makes beautiful pillows. If I were to make a pillow for my own use, I would shred the batting by just pulling it apart in all directions. (This can take the place of a Dammit Doll.) I sew the pillow cover and leave a not-too-small opening; then tuck all batting scraps into this as they are created. I've even given some of these to the food pantry. Someone there needs a pillow.
They do make great pillows for yourself too. We cut scraps small enough to make them soft, don't stuff to full. If it gets soiled you can throw the whole thing in the washer and dryer. Will add food pantry to our list of charities. Thanks for the idea maviskw.
