I don't hide my purchases. He gets the mail. He drives me to the quilt shop. But I did make him a quilt for Christmas one year right out in front of him. He didn't know who it was for because I made 20 that year for Christmas presents. He doesn't even roll his eyes. He just sits in the car, playing Angry Birds while I shop. He gets his stuff for his bike that he rides and his running equipment, shoes etc..

All marriages are different, that's for sure. Looking forward to our 35th anniversary in Jan. and the longer we're together the more we learn about ourselves, espc since the kids are grown. Hiding fabric is the least of the problems we've faced. Plus the older we've gotten, we've both learned new hobbies and we impress each other with our skills. I never dreamed he would do such woodwork, or me quilting. So, I guess we cater to each other. Sometimes I just leave my fabric in the sack for a while, such a fun surprise!

I agree 100%. I don't get it - if you are married to this person and you feel the need to 'hide' your purchases, then I believe you are wrong for having bought it in the first place and chances are you cannot afford it or need it and that is why you hide it. I also do not understand throwing it back in your mates face.
Please, I am not condemning you at all, I just don't get it and cannot understand folks who do it.
What are we teaching our children and grandchildren???
I also agree but it seems that noone wants to engage with our view in this thread... :?

How funny! I enjoyed reading all these posts and have to say, yes, I do hide stuff when I can. I'm not sure why since he doesn't hide ALL HIS GOLF PURCHASES!!! ;-)

Are you saying you're disappointed nobody wants to argue with you? LOL*

I kind of got the impression the OP was being a little cute and tongue in cheek with the hiding of the fabric, I didn't really see it like she has some major trust issue in her marriage. Lol* I pretty much agree with your points, if she's spending their life savings on fabric in a matter of weeks and keeping it from Hubby, then they probably have some big issues to work out! Lol* But I didn't really get that from her post, I think she was just being silly and probably doesn't REALLY go to great lengths to create distrust in her relationship. I think that's why nobody's really making a big deal about rebutting your points of view...and also I think a lot of people here agree with you and that's probably why they are not arguing the points you are making! Lol*

Like I said before, I actually totally relate to the OP and I think it's kind of cute and just a silly thing we do to avoid feeling too guilty over what we purchase. I do similar things but in reality, if my Husband knew ALL of the things I purchased he really wouldn't care. I am probably not totally forthright about the amount of fabric I bring home for a combination of my own guilt and embarassment over the reality of just how much I actually buy! Lol* I might avoid a good amount of teasing from him but he's doesn't REALLY care what I buy.

My money actually so I buy what I like. I've pretty much quit buying fabric just because I adore it though. I finally figured out that there is always a prettier fabric on the designer's table that will be out next year, or the year after and I have plenty.

100 Ways to Hide Your Stash

He doesn't' have to know everything
A few secrets keep a marriage fresh as spring
I'll have it in, and out of sight in a flash
There are 100 ways to hide your stash.

Fill up the cupboard, hide the evidence
Pile it in the pantry spare no expense
Keep it with the kids' clothes, lay it with the wine
Keep it all together where the sun don't shine!

Put it in a Safeway bag, bring it in with the groceries
Call it "Christmas presents - and don't you peek!"
You're "keeping it for a friend" who's gone to Calgary
She'll be back soon - no there's none for me!

Don't tell him what you owe the store
He might start looking in the dryer or the drawer
    It's an affliction breeding secrecy
These quilty pleasures that won't let me be

Pack it in the wardrobe, under the chair
Stack it with the linen, with the silverware
Cram it in the cellar, under the stair
With the winter clothes, with the underwear.

A woman stored hers in the ceiling overhead
For years it stayed there, overtop the bed
Her husband never ever heard a sound
Until the day it brought the ceiling down

He's got golfing and his auto parts
    You've got fabric
He's got cigarettes and butter tarts
    You've got fabric!

Pad it in a pillow, buy a bass violin
Cram it in a corner, tuck it in a tin
Turn off your freezer, fill up your bin
Unplug the oven, you can fit it all in

Buy a few quarters, while you're at the store
Get a little extra - more more more
Slip it in the mattress, hide it under the floor
No more room in here: buy the house next door!

I don't smoke, I don't drink, but I do buy lots of fabric. I'd never hide anything from DH, but sometimes leave my purchases in the sack, just to avoid having to place them at the top of a very high stack. :) We each have our own "addictions", and laugh about leaving the "stuff" for our kids to deal with! My sewing friends have strict instructions to "high-tail" it to my sewing room the instant they hear I've passed on.............to clean it out so it goes to someone who will enjoy it as much as I do!

I don't need the fabric police accusing me of what I should or should not do and I'm not talking about my husband.
