Right now I have a 10x13 bedroom. It's worked pretty well for over 10 years, but I keep accumulating stuff and it's overflowing. I have a new room in the basement that's about 15x17, that has a separate extra big double closet for fabric and batting and kits. The new room is almost done and then all this stuff has to get down there. I'll miss looking out the window too.

For over 25 years I use to sew at our dining room table where ever we lived. My dh never minded which worked out great. After our last child moved out I took over their empty bedroom!! What delight it is to have my own work/craft room.

I started quilting on the dining room table, then different house, children gone, the littlest bedroom. New house is a little over 2400 sq with a full basement. I have part of the family room setup for me. It’s a very large room, 32x36, so front half is furniture & tv. Back half, there is a small bar or kitchenette area with an island and my stuff. My long arm is across the back and in front of it is my sewing cabinet (over 6 ft long), and the cutting island. I can walk all the way around each of these. At the end of the long arm is a door to a storage room. DH built shelves in the front half for my material, etc. In the front of the family room, directly across from my sewing machine is my design wall so while I sew I can look at it, and I have lots of lights! DH grouted the tile in the bathroom on this level today so almost done. It is in the basement but I have a large window behind the longarm. DH built the house so it’s a wood basement with 9’ walls, 8” insulation. We have a subfloor so the flooring is not on the cement. With 9’ walls, after the subfloor and drop ceiling, the ceiling is still normal height. Also, because it’s a wood basement, ductwork is run down inside the walls to the floor like the main floor so the floor is warm. With a wood basement, there is no moisture or humidity issue. It is actually warmer than the main floor. We’ve had wood basements before and I think it is much more usable space than cement or block basements. I thought after sewing in the great room with huge windows looking into the woods, I wouldn’t like being downstairs. I love it!-probably because it’s mine, it works great for me and I waited quite a while for it (read years). DH comes down to talk and watch tv while I’m working on quilts. The funniest thing is our dog, (my avatar) does not like being down there even when we are both there. She comes down for a few minutes and then goes back upstairs!

We went from 1375 sq. ft. to 4775 sq. ft. and with that I now have my very own sewing/quilting/crafting room. Our house is 2575 main level and 2200 in the lower level which is where my room is. However, I still find that I like cutting out my quilts on our kitchen island which is 7' x 3.5' and has a skylight over it. My husband indulges me when I do that because he knows it is just for a couple of hours.

Wow I Like That

I have my own sewing room too. A spare room off the garage. It works. I find if I don't have a designated space, it is too difficult to sew often. Plus then my whole house was a mess. I'm a messy sewer and I don't clean up until my project is done - sometimes that takes months. I gave up keeping a clean house years ago. No one will say when I'm dead "she kept a clean house".

Only in the last 5 years did I turn my son's bedroom into a sewing room. I had a small corner anywhere I could fit my crafting and machine into. I had some space in the living room until we got a couple more furry creatures and DH wasn't about to let them stay outside. Son's room was a guest bedroom and then a catch all. Cleared it out a few times. Like I said only in the last 5 years I got the machine out. Our house is only 891 sf. 3 bed 1 bath. Am always trying to reorganize. I'm one of those who leaves a bigger mess behind. At least no longer do I put things in bags. Clear containers. Things are still misplaced but everything is up. Hate taking things down then putting back up. One of these days. I only want another bathroom and another bedroom. Lord help us when we get company. Oh well. I'll just go to a motel and they can stay at our place. DH can come if he wants. LOL!

We bought our house 35 yrs ago, built in 1918 with a dining room typical of the time it was built.
Since then we have added on, going from 1200 sq ft to 3600 sq ft, and the dining room is now totally my sewing room

BUT, it's only been like that for ~3 yrs(added on 25 yrs ago). The sewing area I've used over the years has been the hall room upstairs and the corner area of our bedroom.

From it I've leaned, I can sew anywhere.

Though I have the old dining room, that is not where I keep my fabric.
When my oldest son moved out, my youngest son decided to move with him, to a house he bought on the local mom & pop golf course.
He was so happy and commented that now his golf clubs will have their own room.
I asked him if he realized now my fabric gets its' own room!

I used to think I wanted a sewing room but I've grown used to the end of the dinner table.

QAYG doesn't require a lot of space and my stash is in a large container.

Cutting and ironing are done on the portable dishwasher in the kitchen.

I don't like the idea of being in isolation and I don't mind picking up because I can't stand too much mess or clutter
