I really don't expect non-quilters to understand what goes into a quilt.
My family love and appreciate them. They get the quilts!! :D

LOL, I say we all make it a prerequisite to anyone who wants to ask any of us for a quilt - that they come to this board and research what it takes to make a quilt. People simply have NO idea or conception of how involved a process it is overall and the fact that it truly is an art form. While this may sound brash (and I don't mean too) at the end of the day, only people deserving of my hard work will recieve them and if they aren't already in that catagory - then they can pay me for my consultation, time, materials and services! My money doesn't grow on trees, and I'm not going to waste the same on putting forth time and effort for others who will not appreciate those efforts and all the love I put into a project no matter how big or small. That's just the ABC's of me and I don't pull any punches!

Explosive blessings, abundance and inspiration to you all!

yep, I feel your frustration. The good news is you have all of us who know exactly how much money and time you put in to them :-)

My two boys always have standing requests for the "next" quilt and they cherish them. Which totally blows my mind since they are currently 17 and 21. Since I hand quilt I don't produce a lot and I only gift to those who I know would truly enjoy the gift. As someone else said, the gift is for the recipient not the giver so give something the recipient would enjoy. That being said, my mom oohs and aaahs over some that I have made but doesn't want one because I put too much work into them and she wouldn't appreciate it as much as she thinks they should be appreciated.

I also know some (my son's girlfriend), who hasn't a clue on the work or the cost and wouldn't really appreciate one. So I simply don't have her on the list.

It is like anything done by hand or machine by someone instead of a factory people just don't realize the time and money unless they do some sort of craft themselves

I haven't given many away but it makes me nervous to think about giving them to people who may not appreciate it. I gave one to my MIL and she thought it took me a year or so to make it (it took me about 2-3 weeks). Then I gave her a pillow and she thought it was store bought until she saw my name on the back. She's been fretting about getting it dirty-I told her not to worry-that it's washable. It's nice that she appreciates them so much. My mom does also but she sews so she knows what goes into them.

Labels should read:

Fabric - $300.00
Time to make quilt - $1200.00
Showing us how much you apprecate what we made for you - priceless.

the best reaction that I ever had was from my husbands grandmother, who at the time was in her mid 90's. She couldn't see too well anymore, and I wanted to do something special, so I made her a black and white log cabin. She looked at me and started to cry because someone thought of her and that I had made it just for her AND that she could see it. (well the pattern anyway)

I've had my fair share of people not appreciating things, and honestly, that's ok. They're not on my list anymore.
