Right now, I don't have any emotional attachment to any individual piece of fabric in this huge stash. My problem is that I have an overwhelming desire to see that it is all used in some fashion that will be helpful to somebody... and just not end up in the city dump after I'm gone. Does this make sense?!

Same here! What if I use it for the current project and then a better use later? So here's my thinking
1. It's overflowing the shelves and can't get to the long arm
2. My style has changed so use it up before more becomes out of date
3. It's been here for 10+ yrs, it's got to go
4. It's overwhelming to walk into that room
5. For charity quilts, someone else can love it.

to Iceblossom: Indeed, that is a nice little "deciding" ceremony.
For the record, I finally pulled the trigger, and used one of the Cranston reds (I have identical pieces of this fabric on two comic boards, not sure why) for the backing of the string quilt. I had to add a strip of white and chose to add a strip of a red and white floral that makes up some of the "strings". And I'm happy about it, once I made the decision. As you say, I moved on.
I'm in the process of sandwiching it now, a quilting chore I'd cheerfully never do again if I could avoid it.

I too have problems using that last piece of a fabric I love. I think I'll adopt something similar to Ice's ceremony. Makes sense to bless someone else with that last piece of much loved fabric.
Well, I'm not sure I jumped off the wagon or not. I make prayer quilts and often need backings in certain colours. I was almost out of a gold I seem to use a lot, so with JoAnns sale and a 25% coupon I got 7 yards of it, which is all they had. That will make 3 backings, one of which I will use this week. So... am I off or still on the wagon?

Belfreybat....replenishing stash for targeted projects, in my opinion, is a safe purchase. I believe each individual sets their own parameters for the moritorium. The goal is to just not splurge for the heck it and to purchase wisely. I could be wrong but that is the boundary I'm operating under. Before joining this thread, I was buying stuff willy nilly..just because. I'm not doing that now and my stash is being used in a more thoughtful way.

The fabric fever came on me yesterday, and I wasted quite a bit of time looking at fabric on-line. I saved photos of the things I wanted in my 'Fabric I Wanted' folder. It was interesting to note that I felt indifferent about everything I had previously put in the folder! Hmmm.

I agree, the moratorium means different things to different people. I have not stopped buying fabric, but I shop my stash first and make thoughtful purchases that have planning behind them not the impulse buying I was doing before.

I just came home from a business meeting 90 minutes from home in a town with a nice quilt shop. My meeting was over early and as I drove by the shop intersection, my car just kept going...so proud of myself...now to spend time this afternoon sewing!
