I have made several and the directions can be very frustrating the first time through - Once it is complete you can do as many as you want. My LQS helped me when I got stuck and I did take a class from Penny Sturges that made very clear. Good luck

Like others have said, it really isn't that difficult. No different than any other pattern you haven't made before. Just read the pattern, following step by step. If you are unsure of your abilities make it out of muslin or some other scraps so you don't worry about wasting the good stuff. You'll be surprised and very proud of your creation (and ability) once you take that first step!!!

Give it a try...and once you've made one...look out. I'm a purse nut and am always looking for a new one to make. Have a closet full. LOL At my quilt shop they are asking where's the new purse. They have asked me to do a show. LOL

My advice is to make something simple like a tote purse. It doesn't require a lot thinking or is hard to do. Look on different sites for simple purses and get going.

I learned in a purse class from a boutique that sells beautiful handmade fabric purses; deco bond is used on every piece of fabric for the purse, no matter what other stabilizer is used, deco bond goes on first. Same with the placemats and table runners that was made and sold there.

Whenever i train someone at work or elsewhere, the first thing I ALWAYS say is there is nothing you can do that hasn't been already done, or undone. It is only thread and fabric. threads can be cut, fabric can be trimmed. And needle holes will almost always disappear.

And if you need help, just ask one of us who make purses/bags/totes. We are all more than happly to help!!

Find goo directions with pictures - I lead a 4-H sewing project last year. All the kids made totes & those who tried purses, followed the pictures and did really well.
The "wiener sack" pillowcases they made were great too. I'd challenge anyone to pick out the ones made an 11 year old!
It's just sewing.

Looking through a web site I noticed a project sewing two placemats together to make a simple bag. I wonder if this might be a good start for those who are uncertain about following a pattern. They can figure out a simple handle to attach to each side and have an easy bag at the end. Just going through the motions with a successful outcome might give them a little confidence. Just a thought.

There's also a very simple project where you just double a placemat, sew up the sides and attach handles. Simple for anyone, including kids.
