It's the piece that serves as the driver between the treadle platform and the drive wheel. In the older machines it was made out of wood and in the later ones it was iron. In the picture it's the wooden rod on the right.

(Picture is confusing because 3 treadles are lined up in my garage awaiting attention.)

The pitman appears to be missing, so can't tell if it was wood or iron. Perhaps it is not a 127? That could explain why it is older, if the serial # is correct. I have a machine that I think is a VS2 from 1894, looks a lot like a 127. Also I know the sphinx was around by 1901.
Look how the pitman attaches to the pedal, it has the socket for the metal pitman arm. The wooden pitman arm has a different way of attaching to the pedal.

The 127's had their bobbin winders set high on the arm where the 27's had them low on the pillar.

Thank you for the info. I checked my machine and mine is Iron.
Do I need to oil the iron, how do I care for it? Kathie

Yes Kathie you need to oil or use sewing machine grease on all the moving parts of the treadle.

I oil/grease (with sewing machine grease) the moving parts of the treadle and clean it with Liquid Gold. The Liguid Gold really shines up the irons on the treadle and it is good for the pitman if you have the wood pitman.

P.S. i posted the link for Singer thru the ages just above your post asking about my avitar
Wow! That is a beautiful quilt and what a neat thing to do with your fabric from the cruise to Alaska!

Here is a picture of my Model 127 Sphinx born in 1913. The Pitman is a little medal rod.
