    My DH has been on a keto diet for 2 months. He is type 2 diabetic and went on it for health reasons. After 1 month, he went to his Dr. because he was starting to get dizzy. Doc cut one of his blood pressure meds in half and took him off one of his diabetes meds. At that point he had lost 17 lb. He went to the Dr. last week and the doc was pretty impressed with his blood test numbers. The Dr. cut his other diabetes med in half and so far DH's daily blood glucose levels are still staying stable. At this point Dh has lost 28 lbs.

    This is not a diet for everyone but for some people it can revolutionize their health and life.

    My husband and I are just starting this diet. I don't know about sugar for your coffee though. I don't use it for mine. Maybe just a bit wouldn't hurt?
    What I like about keto is that most of what you shouldn't eat is stuff that's not good for you anyway.

    SusieQOH there are many different sugar substitutes. 'Just a bit' will hurt. The whole premise of the diet is to get your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates (sugar/starch) for energy.

    I've been playing with keto since august 2018. When I do it well, it works. When I cheat, It doesn't. But, it has reset my need for sugar. I love cream in my coffee, and no longer crave sugar of any kind. I'd rather go without than use artificial sweeteners... that being said, however I can tolerate Swerve sweetener and have a bag of the powdered sugar version. I eat a lot of nuts... almonds, walnuts, pecans, peanut butter, as well as a lot of cheese and meat.
    My favorite 'fill me up soup' is Cream of Chicken, made with half water, half whipping cream. I loved it as a kid, and had forgotten about it...Be sure to eat vegetables, and berries too. They will also help you feel like you're not depriving yourself.
    Keto fat bombs are a great 'desserty' treat. I make mine in mini muffin papers and freeze them. I'll take out one each day and it's enough to feel like I've had dessert without going crazy.

    I tried it many years ago when it was the Atkins diet. Lasted about 5 days before I woke up one day feeling so weak I couldn't even make a few steps into the kitchen. Gave up, ate an English muffin, and felt much better. I am convinced it messed up my metabolism re carbs for years after that.

    My LDL is high so I am cutting way back on meat (I didn't eat much to begin with) and switched to milk instead of cream for my coffee. BTW, when I met DH he was putting sugar in his coffee. I told him, cut back a little each day, you will get used to doing without. He did and never had sugar in it again after a few weeks.

    Ginger K- Yes, you are right. My husband has done a lot more research on this than I have.
    ptquilts- I did the same thing many years ago. I slowly tapered the sugar in my coffee down to none. Now I can't drink it with sugar or any sweetener.

    ptquilts, I think folks have learned some things about going Keto since Atkins came out. One is that you really really need to supplement your minerals-magnesium, sodium and potassium. Somehow your body needs a lot more sodium if you are not eating carbs. It has to do with no longer holding onto water in your fat cells, I think.
    And you can have a period of adjustment when your body is switching over to be a fat burning machine rather than a sugar burning machine. It is called Keto Flu, and you can have a lot of symptoms. For me it took about 2 months to get my energy back.
    I haven't found the Keto lifestyle to help me lose the weight I wanted to lose, but I only wanted to lose about 10 lbs. I have learned in the past year that if there isn't a lot to lose, and if you don't have an insulin issue, Keto may not be of a lot of help in weight loss. But if you are obese, and especially if you are pre-diabetic or already dx'ed with type 2 diabetes, you really can change your life for the better with Keto eating.
    I think, once your body has become "fat-adapted"(learns to use fat for fuel) it makes sense at this time to cut back on the amount of fat you eat. If you are already eating enough fat to fuel you through the day, it may use the food you eat, rather than the fat on your thighs to get energy. (My theory, any way)
    At some point, one is supposed to lose their ravenous appetite, and be able to go all day without eating. That has never happened to me. Fasting can go hand in hand with Keto, as you lose your need to snack. Some people swear by fasting on a regular basis.
    I also recommend the ketogenic forums for help, inspiration and information. But please, like any forum, get on there and do some research before you start asking basic questions. You will probably find most of your questions answered.
    Why am I still eating Keto if I haven't lost all the weight I wanted? Because my stomach feels 99% better and I don't get cranky without a snack. My inflammation from an autoimmune disease has decreased, and my hair is becoming less gray. How about that?

    I loved those movies. My husband and a friend didn't 'get' one and I never could explain it to them because I always started laughing too hard. Thanks for the mind picture. I'll use it when my chocolate craving hits.

    I think the Keto diet has a lot of benefits. The protocol I am following for invasive breast cancer uses it, so I am reading even more about it and getting serious now. I've played with Keto for at least a year.

    I have been an intermittent faster for a long time. I use about a 19-5 window of eating and my body loves it.

    Just a note about the Keto diet.... My daughter did this and lost about 25 pounds. But, if you go back to eating carbs those pounds come back super fast. It took her months to lose then a very short while, eating a few carbs and it soared back up. Some people lose much, much faster than others and she has a lot of digestive problems that did not get any better on the diet. I lost weight many years ago on the old weight Watchers diet and I still think it is a much easier diet to follow. Good luck to you all.

    I was on a Keto/Paleo diet 4-5 years ago & lost approx. 35 lbs. Then, (fatal mistake) after about 3 1/2 months, ate some carbs & from that point, I could never 'get back on the horse' and consequently, re-grained all the weight. It can be difficult in the beginning but if you can get past the first 3-4 weeks & get past the Keto flu, then you should be good.

    Ideally, to stay in Ketosis, you would eat no more than 20-30 Gm of carbs/day. Contrary to the belief that eating so much meat would have a negative affect on your cholesterol, it's just the opposite.

    I used to put French Vanilla creamer in my coffee & eventually adjusted so that now I use half & half for my coffee & no sweetner.

    It really is a much healthier way to eat.
