OK, that line we can still see? Turn the handwheel toward you until you can just barely see it. Then check the position of the hook tip vs. the needle eye.

They -always- look dirtier in photos! My machines are fairly clean but they look filthy in photos. Largely I think it's a fur problem in my house.

It will be easier to check the needle and hook relationship with the throat plate off.

When that line is just about to disappear completely, the eye of the needle should be about the position you see in the first photo - possibly a touch higher but not much. When the eye is there, the tip of the hook should be right behind the eye as in the second photo.

Should I clean the old oil off better? With string and metal polish, I guess?

I turned the hand wheel towards me until I can barely see the bottom line. I am not sure exactly what I need to look for, but the hook point is close to the eye of the needle... I don't have the top threaded--should I do that to show better what is happening?

Oops, I will do that again and first take off the throat plate off.

Does this show enough?

Crud. I don't think the tip of the hook is right behind but a little above the eye. Does it match mine if seen from the same angles? (Mine looks a little different because it's a 222 but the theory is the same)

EDIT: I just saw your other pics. Your machine needs to be timed. I can walk you through it but I'd rather do it through email or ideally via phone and email. I don't want to have someone stumble on this down the road and try it without guidance.

It looks to me like the tip of the hook is probably to the right of the eye in your photo, yes? That means the timing is advanced and we need to correct it.

I would say the tip of the hook (is that the right terminology?) is about 1/8" to the right of the needle when all but a smidgeon of the bottom line of the needle bar is concealed.

Well, rats on the timing... I will PM you to see if we could connect by phone. That would be great...

I will watch for your PM. Then one of us should likely update this thread when we're done.

OK. Sounds good. I hope I can get the timing right, with your help. I have never even contemplated trying it and have no idea what is involved. Talk with you later. Thank you.
