I have rescued two, a cocker spaniel and a mutt/sheltie mix. Both were under 20 pounds, both non-barkers, never hurt anything in the house, and loved to be in the car. Both were also "specia needs" My cocker was blind (she died in 07) and my sheltie has epilepsy (seizure disorder). Both were/are "family," and I love/d them to pieces. Good luck with your search. I hope you find just the right one, and post a pic when you pick one out!

I have a 6 yr old black lab named Sam. We rescued him from the ASPCA when he was a puppy. He is an inside dog. Have to vacuum frequently but no problem having him inside. I highly recommend checking out the ASPCA for your future pet.

I have a chihuahua(male) and he is a very affectionate dog.
In my lap eery time I sit in my recliner. He is smart and obedient. I dont travel much so dont know how he would do on a long trip. A very good companion and watch dog too.

I have a 3# teacup poodle, and a 6# Maltese. The little poodle is a Therapy Dog, but the Maltese will never pass the test. Don't know what I'd do without either of them.

what is a Min Pin?
-------------------
That's short for Miniature Pinscher. Absolutely
not much like a Doberman, we had several rescue
Dobies for many years. I wouldn't suggest them for
an apartment, yet I know darn well that if I lived in
some places I've seen, I would want such a guard!

The Min Pin is sorta more like the Chihuahua, the ones
I've seen are kinda on the nervous side. Pretty little
things, but flighty and jumpy.

My daughter had a Yorkshire Terrier that my granddaughter
saved from the boarding kennel she worked at in the summer. The people who ran the place had thrown it over the fence since the dog's owners hadn't returned to get it. GD called the SPCA because of the bad care all the animals were getting.
She looked the SPCA guy right in the eyes and told him
the Yorkie was hers. The guy just smiled and said for her to take "her" dog right to the vet. Cyril had to have almost all his
teeth pulled and long toe nails clipped. He lived several years
after that and loved them devotedly. Did NOT like children, had
a snarl that would have made a Doberman nervous! He was an
excellent watch dog, and if he had weighed 50 pounds he would have been a killer. And had more than the 4 back teeth left!!

I would suggest one of the small Spaniel group, they seem to
be more laid back and mellow around strangers and kids.

I forgot to add this: please adopt from a local shelter or such. We had purebreds come in quite often, but mutts need homes too and make great companions. Lots of old wives tales abound about shelter dogs/mutts, but having worked with thousands of tehm, please get a shelter dog. Take your time, go without preconception of what you want or think you need, and you will be surprised at who may 'speak' to you.

The collie in my avatar came in to the shelter all matted, covered in dry, caked on mud, grease and seemed blind. I ended up bathing him, falling in love and found out he is totally blind. One of the best loving buddies I have ever had.

I have 2 toy poodles, 1 was yippy, 1 wasn't they are 15-1/2 yr.s old now and hard of hearing, only bark if we don't let them out of their crates in the evening, as fast as they think we should. Very good dogs and each has their own personality.
I now also have a Long legged Chihuahua, weighs about 7 Lb.s, very high energy, would be best as only dog, I can't do that as I also have 4 cats, only 2 will come around her. She came the Humane Society - never thought that would be a good place to get a dog and ---- I was right, wouldn't get another dog there. I bought my poodles from breeders --- only way to go.
Poodles don't shed, cats do and so does Chihuahua, hair is very short, not really a problem.

Duffy is my wonderful little dog and my avitar. He is a 4-year old Border Terrier. Duffy weighs around 18 pounds, is sturdily built, and loves to play and run. He is 4, but he still acts like a puppy.

Although I have had intelligent, good dogs during my life, Duffy is by far the most amazing one. He is a joy, kind, gentle, and loving. I am so blessed to have been able to share my life with Duffy.

Duffy was and is easy to train. His main goal in life is to please me. He is not yappy, and, although he loves to go for walks, he is content hanging out at home. Borders should be brushed on a regular basis, about once a week. If you want, their coats may be stripped, the same as Schnauzers. However, they do not have to be stripped, they can be left "au natural."

I would suggest that you consider getting a Border Terrier. There is a National Border Terrier Rescue site. You might want to start with these folks, if you think you would like to live with a Border Terrier.

I adoped a little mixed bred dog from and animal shelter five years ago when she was about six months old. She has been the nicest dog I've ever had. I really believe an adopted pet understands they are getting a second chance at life and are far more willing to do what you ask of them. All it takes is patience and a lot of love from you.

Another advantage of having a mixed breed is they tend to have fewer health issues like some the pure breeds do.
