I found a beautiful sewing cabinet at an antique mall for $25. It is solid wood, newer than the vintage I've seen, but my old Singers won't fit. The Hinge space is about an inch too wide. The Singers I have need about 9 1/4 inch space and this is a tad over 10 inches between. Any idea what machine this would fit? I had no idea that machine brands were different in this aspect. I have an old dressmaker I may try and measure. It's too pretty to just sit around my house.
Two sets of hinges, btw, so both sides unfold. 8-10 inches on the right "wing" and regular size on the left.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

So I drove my MIL out to do some thrift store shopping today. We got some odds/ends and started home. My MIL said, "Isn't there a little thrift store in the next shopping center". We pulled in. Went into the shop. Sitting RIGHT in front, on the floor with a bunch of baskets was a little dusty black case. I immed. squatted down to look... yup. Professionally serviced, new cord at some point. Musty, dusty, beginnings of mold spots and the usual 221 thread snarl.... that's it. WOW. Happy dance! I'll post pictures when I get it cleaned up.
This is unbelievable! You found a 221 for $10 in this day and age? Geeze, where have the owner's of that Thrift Shop been? Congratulations! This is just one of those I can't believe it stories!

Hello Lori, can you post a picture of the machine? According to Singer, your machine is from 1879 - if what you have is a Singer that is! You can get belts at any sewing repair shop, on line, or on e-bay. They come as generic 72"s, and you have to cut and fit each belt to your machine.

Hope this helps,

Nancy

That is a beautiful Minnesota! Go to the White dating site and scroll down until you get to Serial Number/Dating List. Click there and go through the pages - I think there are 49 pages - until you find your serial number. Minnesota's were made by White and sold at Sears. You should be able to date your machine from the White site.

Look inside...Sears Kenmore cabinets are usually marked with a part and serial number...I'm guessing that's what you've got. :) I know both of the Kenmore cabinets I have are about the same measurements as yours...

I got a surprised today. An old neighbor came by today, she knows I collect sewing machines. she says "I just came by to let you know I have an old Sewing Machine Im giving away if you want it". My eyes popped out, "Oh you bet I want it". All she knows is, it is an old Singer in a cabinet. Can't wait to find out what type Singer it is. I'll post pictures when I get it. :D
