Is the flaking a sign that it should be replaced? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me!
I have a 1948 Featherweight that was also doing this. There is a Featherweight Yahoo group that I joined to learn everything about mine. You can also search differant topics to read what had been previously asked and posted. Hope this helps.

What did you do with your machine Judy? Did you have it rewired? Thanks for the lead re: the yahoo groups!

Scott's Liquid Gold in a wood cleaner and preservative. Billy here recommends the Liquid Gold for using on the cabinets as well as your vintage machines to shine them up and cover the crazing that the really old machines will have. The stuff works great and won't hurt your decals.
The spray Liquid Gold is a little easier to find than the pourable kind, but they are both available at Lowes.

I bought a nice one a few weeks ago for $12.50. Keep looking!

People (i.e., dealers) think they are worth more if they are hand made. The truth is, I'd much rather have one machine pieced--they hold up longer and in general, the workmanship is better.
I will now go and wait for the Quilt Police to show up at my door.[/quote]

Miz Johnny, I knew I liked you!! :-)

Nancy, Here is a photo of the plastic part in the all metal machine. From what I have read in researching, this is the only place in the machine where the plastic part is used. I haven't taken the rest of the machine apart to see what is under the hood. Maybe someone else here knows.
Thanks Monica, that is interesting. I'll have to look at my Rocketeer from 1961 to see if it looks the same.

My 'attendence' here will be spotty, to say the least.

Billy... .I have not forgotton your 301. Still collecting boxes and peanuts for it.
So sorry to hear about your husband. I hope you guys get this figured out soon and he gets better!

And yes, you use the Liquid Gold after the cleaning with a non-pumice like Goop or GoJo on the machine. Also, good for the cabinet.

Sold as a child's machine but it do any light weight straight stitch job there is. It is a electric, battery and hand crank model. My second machine was the Kenmore 3/4 size portable 158.10401. It is the one with the roses on the clam shell case. S/N 0003334. I got it in 1974. It is a work horse. Sears says it was made by Jaguar/Maruzen. My third machine is my favorite. It is a Winselmann made in Germany. It's S/N is 165773. The model is Hera. It can be used as either a hand crank or a treadle machine. I would love to know more about this machine. It has the long bobbins and I have never used the machine, thought in my cursory survey every thing seems to be in working order. My latest purchase was a Singer Slant-O-Matic 403A for $20 in the cabinet. S/N NB176382 so it should have been made in 1956. I love it. I need the knee bar for it .
Julie, I love all your machines, but I especially like the Rocketeer (403) and the Hera! Thanks for the pictures.

There was one spot on the machine that the machine shop guy didn't think he could get off. The previous owner may have put tape on her bed or something. He didn't know if he could get it all off as it affects the varnish. Would Scotts stuff get it off?

I don't have a cabinet for the machine. Just her and a plastic case until I can afford to get a cabinet and a little area in the house to put the cabinet in.

Lauren, is this machine a 99 or 15 clone from Japan? The pretty turquoise color makes me wonder? Billy had said something a while back in this shop about serial numbers that start with a (I am not sure), but maybe JA being the clones from Japan? Billy what did you say about how we could sometimes tell by the first two numbers? I remember vaguely something about the letters, but don't remember what the letters were?

Lauren can you post a picture?

So Sharon the only difference between my 15-88 and your 15-90 is the wheel? I realize the 90 started out as electric and you turned it into a treadle - so now the only difference I can see is the wheel. My 15-88 has a spoked wheel.

I love the little doilly (spelling?) thing you put on the spool pin!
